It is worth mentioning that the marina is one of Sotogrande’s most sought-after residential neighbourhoods, especially since five new islands have been built that offer individual moorings for home owners. The port is considered one of the best yachting ports in the Mediterranean. It features 545 moorings for yachts between eight and 100 metres in length, of which a quarter are for rent, affording good access all-year long for occasional visitors.

Services at the marina include general and meteorological information at the port office (directed by José Cano Infantes), showers, parking, water and electricity connections, ice machines, a laundry service, TV connections, a mail service, a dry dock, repair divers, workshops, fuel, and all manner of yachting equipment. There are even a Webcam watch service, an onsite gymnasium, and a heliport which not too many other marinas offer. For those among you who will need to know these technical details, the entrance is eighty-metres wide and four-metres deep, while the minimum depth in the rest of the port is three metres.

As in the rest of Sotogrande, the variety of activities is impressive at the marina: you can charter a yacht or sailboat as well as rent a variety of vessels including jet skis. Perhaps the nicest part of the port is the prestigious Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande (Sotogrande Royal Sailing Club). Although regattas had been held for many years before, the facilities of the Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande were finally built at the beginning of the nineties. This marked the beginning of light-sailing teaching activities–eventually growing to today’s 500 students per year and offering courses for children and adults alike that include not only all the modalities of sailing but also parallel activities such as skin diving.

The club has also become famous for holding of high-level regattas including national and Andalusia-wide catamaran and Hobie Cat races and some world-wide events such as the 1997 Worldwide Hobie Cat 16 race, which saw participation from 40 countries and perfect wind conditions. The first Spanish Cup for cruisers was also held here in 2000, and the RCMS has now organized 10 Spanish Cups. The club boasts 480 members today and aims to continue to promote sailing in the area of Sotogrande.

Starting from about 140 euros per night, its 148 rooms have been carefully decorated in a style respectful of local tradition. Sotogrande’s flagship spa, Elysium, is part of the hotel. Here, top-class professionals are on call to offer massage, beauty treatments, pre-golf warm-up, and other services. The centre is equipped with fitness rooms, swimming pools, Jacuzzis, saunas, and even Turkish baths.

The residential area is a gated community on 500 hectares of land at the very top of the estate. The name La Reserva was chosen because the protection and creation of a pristine natural environment was a priority in designing the infrastructure, which includes wide roads and pedestrian routes. The property area Los Cortijos de la Reserva includes individual luxury villas overlooking the course as well as terraced townhomes situated near the clubhouse, with communal gardens, a swimming pool, and all the luxury features one might expect from a Sotogrande home. For its part, the 18-hole, Cabell Robinson-designed course opened in 2004. It features large fairways and a surface area of 72 hectares. A second course may be designed in the future. “The Old Course”, as The Robert Trent Jones-designed course is known among aficionados (by contrast to the newer Valderrama) is situated on ideal golfing ground next to the Guadiaro river and the beach, and a short distance from the Sotogrande Marina. A generous cover of pines, cork oaks, eucalyptus, and giant palms provide shade and natural beauty in the midst of particularly large greens and long tees. This was the first course in Europe to use Bermuda grass and ground marble in bunkers.

Competitions held here over the years are too numerous to list but started with the Spanish Open in 1966, which was won by Roberto Vicenzo in 279 strokes, the same score with which Severiano Ballesteros won the Spanish Professionals’ Championship in 1987. The record on the course is held by Pepe Rivero, who finished in 65 strokes.

The regular green fee is €160 for the main 18-hole course and €60 for the 9-hole practice course. Additional sporting facilities include tennis and paddle courts as well as a swimming pool and gymnasium. The clubhouse features the bar, pro shop, and restaurant.

In 1994, King Juan Carlos I authorised the addition of the qualifier “Royal” to the name of the venue. Indeed, a great deal of history, a long-established and well-respected social club, an ideal location, and very complete facilities have all contributed to the general esteem in which the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is held today.

This course contains 18 holes and was designed by Cabell Robinson. It has played host to a number of competitions and its Clubhouse boasts an excellent social life. The clubhouse was opened in 2004 and contains a bar, 2 dining rooms, gym and TV room as well as terraces with outstanding views. La Reserva also offers a shop that is similar to that of Almenara selling clothes, accessories and rentals.

Sotogrande Property

Sotogrande property can be neatly divided into a two distinct property areas. North of the N340 road, the area known as Sotogrande Alto comprises the golf courses of Valderrama, La Reserva, and Almenara as well as Sotogrande International School and the equestrian centre. Here also can be found two luxury hotels from the NH group, the NH Almenara golf and Spa hotel and the NH Sotogrande.
